Kamakhya Temple

Kamakhya Temple is dedicated to the goddess Kamkhya and is one of the oldest centres of the Kulachara Tantra Marga.The main festival celebrated here is the world famous Ambubachi Mela which is the celebration of the yearly menstruation course of Maa Shakti and during these period the temple is closed for three days.On the fourth day Prasad is distributed in two forms “Angodak” means the fluid part of the body-water from the spring and “Angabastra” means the cloth covering the body- a piece of the red cloth used to cover the yoni rock fissure during the days of menstruation.Every year lakhs of pilgrims come from different corners of the world to attend the celebration which includes Sanyasins, black clad Aghoras, the Khade-babas, the Baul, folk Tantriks, Sandhus and Sandhvis with long matted hair etc. and also foreigners from abroad.
