Umananda is mostly visited for its Shiva Temple, the Umananda Temple, which comprises two words ‘Uma’ which means Lord Shiva’s wife and ‘Ananda’ which means Happiness. The island is home to a large population of golden langurs, an endangered species of primate. The British named the island Peacock Island for its structure.
